• B.Sc.F., 1974, University of Chile; M.Sc. (Pest Management), 1977, and Ph.D. (forest entomology), 1980, Simon Fraser University.

• Canadian Institute of Forestry Scientific Achievement Award, 2001; awarded in recognition of significant advances in Canadian Forest Research. Forestry Canada Merit Award for Scientific Excellence, 1995. Scientific Achievement Award, International Union of Forestry Research Organizations (IUFRO), 1990. Forestry Canada Science and Technology Award, 1991.
