Abstract

A study of the impact of human activities in eight land use types on abundance and diversity of Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera) was conducted near Oumé, Ivory Coast. Insects were collected by combination of four traps. Four guilds were discovered (phytophagous, tunnelers, rollers, and dwellers), and their abundance depended on availability of food and other resources. The phytophagous scarabs dominated in mixed-crop fields, the tunnelers dominated in forest and mixed-crop fields, and the rollers in the forest. Only one scarab dweller was found in a 10-year-old teak plantation. The influence of human activity on Scarabaeidae community was diverse but not significant.
